Parking tips for safety

Our Tip of the Week, regarding shopping safety, is courtesy of Help Eliminate Auto Thefts (H.E.A.T.).

“Park in well-lit areas, near sidewalks or walkways. Avoid parking near dumpsters or large vans or trucks. These obstacles decrease your ability to see the space surrounding your vehicle clearly, where thieves or carjackers could be hiding.

Azalea Networks, a provider of wireless network equipment and technology, and Dotworkz Systems, a provider of crime camera enclosures for public safety systems, recently announced deployment of the first phase of a wireless video surveillance solution for the San Diego Police Department.

Fire Safety Risks

Our Tip of the Week, regarding fire safety, is courtesy of Pella Corp.

“Take time to evaluate your fire safety risks near your living space as well. Garage fires often spread quickly and aggressively. Equipping your garage with a smoke detector and checking it regularly can help your family escape to safety quicker in event a fire begins here. Also, with the popularity of fire pits and fire rings being used for outdoor relaxation, it’s essential to properly extinguish these fires to prevent the risk of the fire spreading into your home or others in the neighborhood.”

Printing Security Tip

Our Tip of the Week is courtesy of the SANS Institute

“If you print it, go get it right away. Dont leave important, sensitive, or confidential material lying around the office. Common printing areas are frequented by people coming and going. Often you will be in line to pick up your documents and others may handle them before you. This leads to unnecessary information disclosures. One boss had a print job disappear, and had e-mailed the whole floor about it. The pages never turned up. Always use the closest print station, or a dedicated printer for confidential information, and go get it right away.”

Using Public Computers

Our Tip of the Week is courtesy of the SANS Institute.

“Don’t enter your username and password on any computer you don’t control. Using public computers will always carry the risk of exposing your personal data. ‘Public’ computers — as in college library computers. A Kentucky college student has been charged with identity theft and unlawful access to a computer for allegedly breaking into other students’ e-mail accounts at the University of the Cumberlands, and using the access and information to blackmail them. He did this by allegedly placing spyware on computers at the college library to harvest the information he needed to access the e-mail accounts. Then he threatened to divulge the contents of certain messages unless the students complied with his demands.”

Homeland Security.
“You should keep enough supplies in your home to meet the needs of you and your family for at least three days. Build an emergency supply kit to take with you in an evacuation. The basics to stock in your portable kit include: water, food, battery-powered radio and flashlight with extra batteries, first aid supplies, change of clothing, blanket or sleeping bag, wrench or pliers, whistle, dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape, trash bags, map, a manual can opener for canned food and special items for infants, elderly, the sick or people with disabilities. Keep these items in an easy to carry container such as a covered trash container, a large backpack, or a duffle bag.”

Turn Your PC and Camera Into a Video Security and Surveillance System

WebCam Monitor keeps watch over your home, office, or any location. It detects motion or noise, and triggers customizable Alerts that can record video and audio of the incident, notify you by e-mail or text message, or sound an audible alarm. It can also begin recording at pre-set intervals to maintain a record of events.

It’s as simple as connecting a camera to your PC, or an IP camera to your network. Using the configuration wizard, your surveillance system can be up and running in minutes. Using multiple cameras, it’s easy to monitor large areas from a single PC.

Your surveillance system is on guard 24 hours a day—or you can use the powerful built-in Scheduler to activate and deactivate monitoring on a daily, weekly, or custom timetable. When motion or noise is detected, you can see a snapshot from your camera seconds later on a mobile phone. WebCam Monitor can automatically upload recorded video, audio, and snapshots to a server. This lets you view them from anywhere, at any time, and also makes it impossible for an intruder to steal or destroy them, as is possible with traditional videotape-based systems. Video can also be streamed live over the Internet, letting you monitor events from any computer with an Internet connection.

Professional security features include automatic time-stamping of recorded video and snapshots. All monitored activity is displayed in an event log for quick reference. The Auto Delete function lets you keep a “last number of days” set of recordings and snaps, without risking filling your hard disk and without having to manually track and delete files.

WebCam Monitor is a complete video security solution, with both multiple camera support and remote monitoring. WebCam Monitor goes far beyond traditional video security systems, with with an astounding combination of power and flexibility. It is the perfect way to turn your PC into a sophisticated monitoring and surveillance system.

With WebCam Monitor you can:
Use webcams and IP cameras to monitor and record video.
Schedule monitoring to start and stop automatically.
Record continuously from any selected camera.
Broadcast the video from your camera so you can view it remotely.
Stamp the video recording with date and time for legal purposes.
Use a wizard to automatically configure WebCam Monitor for common monitoring scenarios.
Get e-mail notifications with a photo snap of the triggering event.
View all event history, along with recordings and photo snaps, from within WebCam Monitor.
Set up a web site whose images are constantly updated by WebCam Monitor.
Digitally zoom any camera up to 200%.
Upload recorded videos, audios, and photo snaps using FTP.
Configure one or several cameras for viewing and monitoring.

Back to school safety tips

More than 50 million kindergarten through 12th grade students will soon return to classrooms with backpacks full of new pencils and books. But, one more must-have item should be checked off the back-to-school list — school safety.

According to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, an estimated 2.2 million crimes were reported on public school campuses nationwide during the 2005-06 school year alone and 78 percent of schools reported violent incidents.

Patrick Fiel, public safety advisor for ADT Security Services and former head of security for Washington, D.C. Public Schools says, “Parents who are actively involved in their student’s school security can improve their child’s safety and success on campus. Bullying, gangs, drug sales, weapons and sex predators are on the streets every day.”

To help parents prepare for a safe school year, Fiel and ADT have developed a list of safety tips to help parents keep kids safe before, during and after school.

Before school:

If your child walks or rides a bicycle to school, help him or her choose the safest possible route with the fewest street crossings and walk or ride with him or her if possible. According to a child safety organization, pedestrian injury is the second leading cause of accidental injury-related death among children ages 5 to 14. Talking with children about biking and walking safety can help to reduce their risk of injury.
Be sure there is at least one parent with children waiting at a school bus stop. This is a time when potentially risky activity, such as bullying and fighting, can take place.

By L. Samuel Pfeifle – 06.04.2009

New Applications for Video Monitoring

This is great stuff. The world is opening up to many new video applications.

Toshiba has found a way to make changing the radio station in your car as easy as blinking your eye. The electronics giant is developing in-car facial recognition technology that eliminates the need to take your hands off the wheel.

While it might seem unnecessary, if not pointless, to make such menial tasks like turning off Howard Stern or cranking up the AC any easier, Toshiba spokesman Hiroko Mochida said the technology will increase safety and save lives.

Tips for keeping you safe

Theft of valuables from home due to carelessness is very common. Never take home security for granted. If you make an effort to be secure, you will be protecting your family and your valuables much better.

Tips To Prevent Burglaries

  • Securing doors and windows is extremely important. Many burglaries occur as vandals had easy access to the garage door where they worked unnoticed to gain entry into the house. Never leave your house, even for just a few minutes, without locking all doors and windows. Use dead bolts to improve home security. A pet entrance is not advisable. Have wide angled viewer installed in the main door to check who is at the door.
  • Do not leave an extra pair of keys hidden outside your house; instead, leave them with a neighbor or friend.
  • Make sure all doors and windows, which are not within your view, are locked when you are at home.
  • Fuse boxes and power sources have to be secured, to make it impossible for criminals to tamper with them.
  • Have a good burglar alarm installed.
  • Make sure you periodically check all home security systems and have them serviced regularly.
  • Keep your garden trimmed ensuring an unobstructed view of your house from the road or your neighbors.
  • If you have to deal with windows accessible from the fire escape be sure to check that the windows are hardy, tamper proof, and secure.
  • Never leave a message in your answering machine, indicating you are away.
  • Do not have predictable habits change your routine often.
  • Get your self a sturdy safe to lock up all valuables and important documents.
  • Keep your home insurance up to date.
  • Change all locks if you just moved into the house.
  • Get a good private home security monitoring system to enhance home security.
  • Do not leave ladders and other tools lying that can be used by vandals to gain entry into your home.
  • Join a neighborhood watch program.
  • Trim and maintain your garden, trees should not be used by criminals to gain entry into the upper floors of your home. Be sure that the branches are cut securing your home.
  • In the event you lose a key, change the tumblers of all locks.

Security Solutions for Small Business
