I read an article about Mayor Bloomberg’s trip to London this week to observe the “Ring of Steel” video surveillance system in operation. This comes on the heels of a decision to spend 200 million dollars to buy 3000 high end video analytic smart cameras for Lower Manhatten. In addition, the Sunday front page of the Arizona Daily Star has an article about a mobile video surveillance system that is used on the border to help keep it secure. It works using motion detection, daytime cameras and thermal night time cameras with GPS to help track illegal border traffic. Another 35 to 40 units are on order because it is one of the few ideas on the border issue that actually works.

Not everyone agrees that having these advanced security measures is exactly what made America free and great. But it does show the reality of the world we live in and what we have to do to try and protect ourselves from the bad people who want to do us harm. If that explosive device had gone off in Times Square, there would have been a panic. I don’t really believe that the average American begrudges a poor hispanic person from wanting to work to support their family if they would just go back to their country of origin or put in the effort to become a legal citizen. But the problem is if they are getting through, who or what else is getting through?

The moral of this story is to remain vigilant, and be grateful that we have the Military, the Border Patrol and the first responders who have the tools and gumption to try and keep us safe. It’s a different world that we live in, but with common sense and advanced technology I think we can keep each other safe.

Let me know what you think.

The citizens of the state of Arizona are being asked to approve a one cent sales tax next week in order to generate some additional revenue that is supposed to keep teachers employed and classrooms size to less than fifty kids.

Being the owner of a “Brick and Mortar” type business who also wants to generate sales on the internet, I was curious about your opinion on the taxing of sales of goods over the internet. On the surface, the idea that internet entrepreneurs are allowed to sell products and not have to charge sales tax to the end user does not seem fair. The owner of a physical store has costs associated with that store that the internet business owner does not have. This is fine in and of itself because of the free market, but the equation becomes distorted when one has to charge almost an additional 10% to their customer to finance the operation of the city and state in which his or her building exist.

In addition, five to six hours a month with a paid employee are dedicated to keeping in compliance with all of the demands of the city and state revenue departments.

I sincerely wish to vote for this proposed tax to support education. I don’t think there is anything more important than the education of a community’s children. But it seems somewhat unfair that my customers have to pay almost ten percent more for purchasing a product from my physical store as opposed to an internet store location. Business is tough enough without this additional burden being thrust upon a store owner.

It seems as if we could generate a lot of revenue by taxing the sale of goods over the internet. The internet is no longer than innocent child waiting to grow up and be a mature business. How about a level playing field?
Please let me know what you think. At some level we are all in this together, and we must try to solve some of these problems we face. I am interested in your solutions. Got any?

I have a friend in the Mortuary business who is always complaining that people could save a lot of money and hassle if they would just come to see him before they died, instead of leaving the problem to others after the grim reaper had paid them a visit. They call that pre-need in the death business. That got me to thinking that we face the very same problem in the security industry. When there is a robbery or break-in or an employee is stealing from a business, there is this big emergency to get something done right away. The old “I needed it yesterday” syndrome. After a few days have passed, and the distress and anger have subsided somewhat, all of the sudden that money that was intended to help you secure your family or business profits is needed to pay the electric bill. After all, what are the chances that this could happen to you again? Right? http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/

Well, unfortunately, the odds are pretty good that you could be the victim of another assault on your peace of mind. Criminals (or bad employees) just love to return to a crime scene where they know they got away with something, and the person who was violated did nothing to fix the problem.

Doesn’t it just make more sense to be pro active in regard to your safety and peace of mind by doing something before you have a problem? With all of the new technology available in the security industry, and with the price of equipment (especially in video surveillance) coming down to affordable levels, it just makes sense to invest in your security before there is a situation that could bring massive stress into your life or maybe even something worse than that.

By being pro active, you can improve the odds that you or your company can resist being a victim. Something as simple as providing a panic button for your employees, or having a video surveillance system in your parking lot or place of business, or a good, basic security system in your home, will make the bad guys think twice before disturbing you. What if someone claims that they fell down or slipped on your sidewalk, or inside of your business? A good video surveillance system can stop a liability issue from rearing its ugly head. I can’t tell you how many times that business owners, who have professionally installed video systems from Moore Security Solutions, tell me that issues involving change being made, or arguments between employees and customers, or even liability issues, have been solved immediately when the customer found out that the entire incident was recorded digitally from a surveillance camera.

Please, don’t allow yourself to be a victim. If you think that it couldn’t happen to you, think again. If you own a computer, you have information on it that an identity theft professional wants. If you own a business that has critical customer information on your computer system, you must take measures to stop that information from being available to anyone who throws a rock through your window.

All of the scenarios I have presented are important. But the one that is maybe the most important is the loss of innocence that comes over a person when their home or business has been broken into, their belongings stolen, and their privacy shattered. Unfortunately, I have to see this every day. Losing your big screen T.V. is one thing; the feeling of being violated or having not done everything possible to protect yourself and your families well being is one feeling that never really goes away.

So, please take the time to protect that sense of well being. Take the time to provide your employees and your family with some peace of mind. Take the time to secure your world. And please do it pre-need!

If you have any comments about this article, please respond and let me know what is on your mind. Have you ever felt the sense of being violated when your home or business has been broken into? Drop me a line, and tell me how you felt. Thanks for taking the time to interact. Hopefully, working together as a community, we can start to take back control of our lives.

Also, that lets me have something to talk about next week!

I was thinking about being in Las Vegas two weeks ago at the International Security Conference, the premiere event in the security world. One of the great things about the show is that even after fifteen years, I always find myself feeling like a little boy at Christmas when he sees all the new toys. I have to tell you, this is a great industry. On Thursday, I received a demonstration from a German company called Mobotix. They only sell five different cameras, but I think they use magic to get these cameras to do what they do. They have one camera that has full digital quality with a true 180′ panoramic view that can be zoomed in with astounding clarity. And that’s from any location on earth with a network connection! Obviously, like all industries, we have our share of flakes , but a lot of them have been washed away in the recession. In this economy, you have to be able to deliver what you promised(or else, never give up trying!)

I’m talking about working in an industry that continues to develop cutting edge products and merge new technologies that are geared to making the world a safer place to be in. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t, but I believe the effort is true. The great thing is that we get to play with new toys to try to solve our client’s problems, and then we get to feel good about helping people to sleep a little easier every night.

So, I just wanted to say thank you to the current clients that we have who have helped us through the tough times we have all been in. Your support and referrals have allowed us to keep on fighting. And thanks to the major and minor manufacturing companies who continually come up with solutions to complicated problems. Your dedication and research paves the way for a bright and safer future for our communities. And a preemptive thank you to our future customers and vendors for letting Moore Security Solutions work in one of the best industries in the world. As we embark on new journeys as a company, let’s all work together to make your world more secure.
